McDowell Family

Welcome to Frosty Hill Australian Labradoodles

Hi! We’re Kayla and Scott McDowell, the family behind our small, home-based program raising Multigenerational Australian Labradoodles in Pennsylvania.

For us, this isn’t just breeding—it’s a huge part of our everyday life. Our dogs are raised right in our home alongside our two young children, where they are loved, handled, and socialized from the very beginning. They nap in our rooms, play in our yard, tag along for family activities, and grow up experiencing the sights and sounds of a busy household. Because of this, our puppies transition beautifully into family life.

Animals have always been a big part of Kayla’s life. She previously worked as a Veterinary Assistant and later ran her own in-home dog sitting business for five years, caring for many beloved pets in the community. Her love for the Australian Labradoodle began in 2014 when Scott’s aunt, Jan Sunday, introduced her to the breed. Jan is the breeder behind Australian Labradoodles of Slate Ridge, where she has been raising Miniature Australian Labradoodles since 2007. Learning from her and spending time with these incredible dogs is what inspired us to begin our own program.

Over the years we’ve owned many different dogs, including both rescues and purposefully bred dogs. Because Scott has allergies to many breeds, discovering the low-shedding, allergy-friendly Australian Labradoodle felt like the perfect match for our family. But what truly won us over was their temperament. Australian Labradoodles are incredibly intuitive, loving, intelligent, and eager to please. Their gentle, soulful personalities make them amazing companions for families.

Today, our focus is on raising puppies with strong temperaments, wonderful health, and the kind of early life experiences that help them thrive in their new homes. Every puppy is loved as part of our family from the moment they arrive.

When families bring home one of our puppies, our hope is simple—that they gain a loyal companion, an adventure buddy, and a dog that will be deeply loved for years to come.

Why choose us?

Health Testing That Goes Above and Beyond

At Frosty Hill, the health and well-being of our dogs—and your future puppy—are at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we commit to rigorous health testing that exceeds the standards for responsible breeding.

All of our parent dogs undergo:

  • PennHIP Testing – To evaluate hip joint health and screen for early signs of hip dysplasia with one of the most accurate methods available.

  • OFA Hips & Elbows – Certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals to ensure strong joint structure and minimize the risk of hereditary conditions.

  • Comprehensive Genetic Panels – Run through industry-leading labs to screen for a wide range of inherited diseases common to our breeds, helping us make informed and responsible breeding decisions.

  • Eye Exams (CAER Certified) – Performed by board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists to confirm healthy, clear eyes free from congenital defects.

  • Cardiac Testing – To ensure every dog in our program has a healthy heart and passes all relevant cardiac clearances.

This level of commitment has earned us Gold Paw Status with the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA)—a designation reserved for breeders who meet the highest standards in health testing and ethical breeding practices.

When you choose a Frosty Hill puppy, you’re choosing a legacy of health, integrity, and dedication to the long-term well-being of every dog we raise.

Caring for Puppies

Our puppies’ journey actually begins long before they are born. Because our dogs live right alongside us as family pets, our moms-to-be receive lots of love, attention, and gentle affection throughout their pregnancy. From belly rubs to quiet time together, this early connection helps keep mom relaxed and comfortable while also introducing the puppies to the positive experience of human touch. As a stay-at-home mom, I’m home with them most of the day, so they are rarely without company.

When the puppies arrive, we continue that hands-on care from the very beginning. Starting on day three through day sixteen, we practice Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS). These are short, gentle exercises designed to support a puppy’s early development during a critical stage of life. ENS has been shown to help build confidence, improve stress tolerance, support learning ability, and strengthen the bond between puppies and people. Some of these exercises include gently holding the puppy on their back, lightly touching between their toes, or briefly introducing new sensations such as a cool cloth under their feet.

Because our puppies are raised right in our home, they are naturally exposed to the everyday sights and sounds of family life. From children playing and conversations around the house to vacuums, dishwashers, TVs, and all the little noises that come with a busy home, our puppies grow up learning that these things are normal. This early exposure helps them develop confidence and adjust more easily to life with their future families.

Our goal is always to give each puppy the very best start possible. By focusing on early development, socialization, and plenty of love along the way, we help nurture happy, confident companions. Our dogs are never just part of a program—they are truly part of our family. Every pregnancy, every puppy, and every milestone is handled with care, patience, and a whole lot of love.

Our Commitment to Our Puppies and Families

Raising puppies is something we take incredibly seriously. We are committed to thoughtful breeding, raising our dogs in a loving home environment, and supporting our puppy families every step of the way.

From careful planning and early socialization to ongoing communication with our families, our goal is to make the transition as smooth as possible for both puppies and their new homes. We are always happy to answer questions, offer guidance, and stay connected long after your puppy goes home.

When you welcome one of our puppies into your family, you’re not just getting a dog—you’re joining a community that truly cares about each puppy for their entire life.

ABOUT AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLES

To be classified as an Australian Labradoodle the dog’s pedigree must include a combination of these three breeds (Labrador Retriever, the Poodle, and the English OR American Cocker Spaniel) and it’s helpful if it can be traced back to the kennels in Australia where the breed first originated. There are different classifications of Labradoodles based on how many generations they have been bred. The multiple generations of breeding, should produce the finest coats, qualities, and appearance.

The Australian Labradoodle tend to be multigenerational, with both parents being Australian Labradoodles. While Labradoodles can be a variety of generations from early first crosses to multigenerational. Australian Labradoodle puppies are the result of generations of breeding time and investment. They are low to no-shedding and allergy-friendly.

Australian Labradoodles come in three basic sizes:
· Miniatures are 17″ and under

· Mediums are 18-21″

· Standards are 22″ and over

Australian Labradoodles have two types of coats:
· Fleece textured coat is a soft texture, similar to the Angora goat. It can have a straight wavy look or a soft spiraling curl look. It is easy to manage a textured coat.

· The wool textured coat is like a lamb’s wool in texture.  It should have the appearance of looser spiraling wool which opens up easily to the skin.  It should not appear thick and dense or tightly curled.

Organizations like the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA) work to ensure a consistent, predictable pet with the kind, gentle, intelligent nature of a therapy-quality dog. With the temperament of a service dog and being allergy and asthma friendly, they are the perfect fit for any family!

HISTORY OF THE LABRADOODLE

The Australian Labradoodle breed dates back to the 1980’s and was initiated by Wally Conron of Royal Guide Dogs, located in Victoria Australia. The intent was to create a breed that was allergy and asthma friendly with the temperament of a service dog. This journey was inspired by a vision-impaired woman in Hawaii who needed a Guide Dog which wouldn’t aggravate her husband’s allergies. Of the 31 Labradoodles bred at Royal Guide Dogs, a staggering 29 made it through as guide dogs, an accolade of unparalleled proportion for this “new breed” of guide dog.

The general public became interested in these smart and easy to train dogs and their non-shedding, allergy friendly coats have played a huge part in their current success and popularity. The Australian Labradoodle breed was further developed with the infusion of other breeds into the line such as the American and English Cocker Spaniel to add other desirable traits. While originally developed in Australia, responsible American breeders are dedicated to the continued development of this wonderful and unique breed.

Organizations have been formed to protect the continued development of the Australian Labradoodle lines, and guidelines for the continued introduction of English and American Cocker Spaniel are followed carefully. It is an exciting time to be involved in the development of this breed!
