McDowell Family

Welcome to Frosty Hill Australian Labradoodles

We are Kayla and Scott McDowell, a small family breeder of Multigenerational Australian Labradoodles in Pennsylvania. We raise all of our dogs in our home with our two young children, and cherish each one of them! From sleeping in our rooms, to joining us on all of our family adventures, our labradoodles are true family members!

Kayla has always been involved with the care of animals. From working as a Veterinary Assistant at an Animal Hospital to operating her own In-Home Dog Sitting business for 5 years. She has always had a passion for animals but took a liking to the Australian Labradoodle after her husbands Aunt, Jan Sunday introduced her to the breed in 2014. Jan is also a breeder of Miniature Australian Labradoodles and has been operating Australian Labradoodles of Slate Ridge since 2007.

Throughout our lives we have had a variety of different dogs. We have experienced both well-bred dogs as well as rescues. With Scott suffering from allergies with most breeds, and this breed being low shedding and allergy friendly it was an easy decision to want to continue in his Aunts footsteps and start our own line of breeding. Having been around this breed quite often and seeing first hand how wonderful they are we knew the Australian Labradoodle was the breed we wanted to dedicate our lives to. Their trainability, loyalty and gentle soulful nature are matched by no other breed.

Why choose us?

Health Testing That Goes Above and Beyond

At Frosty Hill, the health and well-being of our dogs—and your future puppy—are at the heart of everything we do. That’s why we commit to rigorous health testing that exceeds the standards for responsible breeding.

All of our parent dogs undergo:

  • PennHIP Testing – To evaluate hip joint health and screen for early signs of hip dysplasia with one of the most accurate methods available.

  • OFA Hips & Elbows – Certified by the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals to ensure strong joint structure and minimize the risk of hereditary conditions.

  • Comprehensive Genetic Panels – Run through industry-leading labs to screen for a wide range of inherited diseases common to our breeds, helping us make informed and responsible breeding decisions.

  • Eye Exams (CAER Certified) – Performed by board-certified veterinary ophthalmologists to confirm healthy, clear eyes free from congenital defects.

  • Cardiac Testing – To ensure every dog in our program has a healthy heart and passes all relevant cardiac clearances.

This level of commitment has earned us Gold Paw Status with the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA)—a designation reserved for breeders who meet the highest standards in health testing and ethical breeding practices.

When you choose a Frosty Hill puppy, you’re choosing a legacy of health, integrity, and dedication to the long-term well-being of every dog we raise.

Caring for Puppies

We begin our puppy training while they are still in utero. Since our dogs are our family pets they receive lots of massages and the comforts of touch all throughout pregnancy. This begins the process of getting the puppies used to human touch in a positive way, while keeping the moms to be stress level low. As a stay at home mom myself, they have almost constant company!

Once our puppies are born, we begin Early Neurological Stimulation (ENS) with them on the third day of life through the sixteenth. It is a list of short exercises that help to stimulate the puppies in ways that would not occur naturally during this early period of life. We start this to benefit each puppy with their development and it is known to help boost intelligence, instill trust, enhance training, increase tolerance to stress, and improve their overall health. Some of these exercises include holding the puppy on his/her back, placing the feet on a cool, damp cloth, touching between each toe, etc. This is a great way to get them used to touch and starts them off on the right track to become your perfect companion or therapy dog, if desired!

Since our puppies are raised in our home they are also introduced to the normal hustle and bustle of a house very early on in life. We make sure they are exposed to common household noises including the vacuum, children, ice machines, dishwashers, and TVs. This also exposes them to a lot of socialization from early on, giving our puppies the confidence they need to go to their future homes!

It is our goal to maximize the potential of each puppy from each litter by stimulating their learning abilities, interests and natural instincts, beginning in utero, and continuing throughout their socialization window. Our dogs are not just our business, they are our pets and part of our family; therefore, we go above and beyond in caring for each one, and assuring each pregnancy is a great, gentle experience, with lots of tender loving care for each Mamma.

ABOUT AUSTRALIAN LABRADOODLES

To be classified as an Australian Labradoodle the dog’s pedigree must include a combination of these three breeds (Labrador Retriever, the Poodle, and the English OR American Cocker Spaniel) and it’s helpful if it can be traced back to the kennels in Australia where the breed first originated. There are different classifications of Labradoodles based on how many generations they have been bred. The multiple generations of breeding, should produce the finest coats, qualities, and appearance.

The Australian Labradoodle tend to be multigenerational, with both parents being Australian Labradoodles. While Labradoodles can be a variety of generations from early first crosses to multigenerational. Australian Labradoodle puppies are the result of generations of breeding time and investment. They are low to no-shedding and allergy-friendly.

Australian Labradoodles come in three basic sizes:
· Miniatures are 17″ and under

· Mediums are 18-21″

· Standards are 22″ and over

Australian Labradoodles have two types of coats:
· Fleece textured coat is a soft texture, similar to the Angora goat. It can have a straight wavy look or a soft spiraling curl look. It is easy to manage a textured coat.

· The wool textured coat is like a lamb’s wool in texture.  It should have the appearance of looser spiraling wool which opens up easily to the skin.  It should not appear thick and dense or tightly curled.

Organizations like the Australian Labradoodle Association of America (ALAA) work to ensure a consistent, predictable pet with the kind, gentle, intelligent nature of a therapy-quality dog. With the temperament of a service dog and being allergy and asthma friendly, they are the perfect fit for any family!

HISTORY OF THE LABRADOODLE

The Australian Labradoodle breed dates back to the 1980’s and was initiated by Wally Conron of Royal Guide Dogs, located in Victoria Australia. The intent was to create a breed that was allergy and asthma friendly with the temperament of a service dog. This journey was inspired by a vision-impaired woman in Hawaii who needed a Guide Dog which wouldn’t aggravate her husband’s allergies. Of the 31 Labradoodles bred at Royal Guide Dogs, a staggering 29 made it through as guide dogs, an accolade of unparalleled proportion for this “new breed” of guide dog.

The general public became interested in these smart and easy to train dogs and their non-shedding, allergy friendly coats have played a huge part in their current success and popularity. The Australian Labradoodle breed was further developed with the infusion of other breeds into the line such as the American and English Cocker Spaniel to add other desirable traits. While originally developed in Australia, responsible American breeders are dedicated to the continued development of this wonderful and unique breed.

Organizations have been formed to protect the continued development of the Australian Labradoodle lines, and guidelines for the continued introduction of English and American Cocker Spaniel are followed carefully. It is an exciting time to be involved in the development of this breed!
